Acne Scars Treatment

Acne usually leaves scars on the face or other areas. For some people, they can be very painful and bothering which can be treated with some home remedies and medical treatments. Treatment options on the type and extent of scarring can include-

Type of acne scars

The suitable treatment option might vary depending on the type of scar so there are three types of acne scars.

Atrophic scars- these scars appear as small indications on the skin. They occur when the skin doesn’t produce enough fibroblasts in the healing process. Fibroblasts are cells that play a crucial role in wound healing and collagen production.

Hypertrophic scars- occur when the skin makes too many fibroblasts as the acne spot heals causing a raised scar.

Keloid scars- they are similar to hypertrophic scars but they are thicker at the acne spot leading to hyperpigmentation and dark skin as compared to surrounding areas.

Chemical peels

the type of peel depends on the individual’s skin type, acne severity, and scarring. A person may require several peels to see which one suits them according to their skin and the extent of scarring.

Micro-needling

it is the process of inserting tiny needles into the skin surrounding the scar to stimulate the body to make more collagen. The collagen reduces the appearance of scars on the skin.

Dermal fillers

soft tissue fillers to treat atrophic acne scars. Options include collagen-based products, hydraulic acid, silicon, polyacrylamide, polymethyl methacrylate, and poly-L-lactic acid.

Laser treatment

this treatment procedure resurfaces the skin without the use of chemicals or scrubs. It removes the uppermost layer of the skin to reveal the younger skin cells that help reduce the effect of scarring.

Surgery

if other treatments don’t work, surgery is the only option left to remove scars.
